Hasselt is a small city with lots to offer. Last year around 330,000 tourists visited the city of Hasselt. Many of them were international visitors who liked what they saw and made sure to come back. With all those visitors coming in, there is no wonder that many hotels have opened in the area making it even more appealing to visitors. It won’t be long before you discover why so many people are flocking here. Hasselt has plenty of things to do that are sure to leave a lasting impression and make you want to come back for more. Here is our list of what to do in Hasselt if you only have one day:

Morning: Visiting the Museum Hasselt

The Museum Hasselt is a classic place to start with any visit to a new city. The museum is home to over 5,000 gems from the Roman period, Medieval and art nouveau eras, as well as a collection of Asian art and instruments. The building is also worth a visit in its own right, and was designed by architect and fellow Belgian Victor Horta. If you are visiting in the winter months, don’t worry as the museum has it all covered. The building is home to a greenhouse filled with tropical plants and a rainforest that makes it feel like you are miles away from Hasselt. If you are visiting in the summer months, you can also enjoy the outdoor areas. The Japanese garden Hasselt area is home to lots of tropical plants, and there is also a playground for kids. If you have young kids with you, or are a student, you can visit on a Tuesday or a Thursday and get in for free. If you have an Interrail ticket or a Eurail ticket, you can also save 10% on the entrance fee.

Afternoon: Stroll through the city center and enjoy the view from the rooftop of the Town Hall

After spending the morning visiting one of the city’s museums, it’s time to head out into the city center. The first building that you will notice as you walk through the city centre is the Town Hall. With its bright yellow facade and its tall spire, this building really is hard to miss. If you have time, walk up the staircase that leads to the roof terrace. There, you will be rewarded with a great view of the city. If you are visiting between June and August, you can also enjoy a drink at the rooftop bar that is open all year round. After seeing the city centre, it is time to see the real beauty of Hasselt. Be sure to walk along the Meirovi Boulevard. At almost 2 km long, it is one of the longest boulevards in Europe. It is also home to the longest walking path in Belgium. If you prefer a more active way to explore Hasselt, you can also rent a bike and cycle down the boulevard. The boulevard is also a great place to go for a walk at sunset and get a different view of the city.

Late Afternoon: Hasselt Food Festival – eat your way through Hasselt!

If you are visiting Hasselt in the spring and you love food, you won’t want to miss the Hasselt Food Festival. This festival is held in the last week of March and sees local restaurants create special menus inspired by the ingredients available at that time of year. Visitors can taste their way through the menus and vote for the ones that they like most. The top three menus are awarded prizes the best menus, and the judges will also come up with a winner for the best restaurant. If you love food festivals, you can also visit the Hasselt Beer Festival. This festival is held in the first week of October and features over 80 types of beer, as well as food and live music. The beer festival is a great place to spend an afternoon enjoying Belgian beer and enjoying the company of friends.

Evening: End your day with a music festival in Martini Park

Hasselt is home to many festivals and events, but one of the highlights is the music festival in Martini Park. The festival takes place every year in August and features concerts by local and international artists. This year, the line-up includes artists such as Clean Bandit, Triggerfinger, Joey Badass, and The Brian Austin Green band. If you like music, don’t miss out on this event. No visit to Hasselt would be complete without a walk around the park. This large park is also home to a lake where you can go for a paddle. A park is a great place for a stroll or to sit and relax while soaking up the atmosphere. It is also home to the Flemish Wildlife Centre where you can learn more about the environment around you.
